German Guy at 330 kmph
November 12, 2006 on 12:49 am | In Uncategorized | No CommentsI was talking with Sonya about death yesterday. One of her patients was
living a perfectly healthy normal life. Took good care of herself and
family. Started with cold-like symptoms and within a few days was
having trouble breathing. Turns out she got some rare form of cancer.
So the doctors found all this out while she was under anesthesia. They
couldn’t/didn’t want to wake her up until her family could all be there
because she might have knocked out her breathing tube.
Her day yesterday was essentially this: wake up almost a week after
going in for a biopsy. Be told by the doctors that you will probably
die within 1 or two days. Luckily all your family is there for you,
but… JESUS!
I don’t think death really frightened me until I met (and now married)
Sonya. I’ve told her this, that my best expression of my love for her
is how I think about us and death. Weird right? “Sonya. I love you. Now
I don’t want to die.” and “If you die, I want to build a chair into
your tombstone because I won’t leave”.
Beyond this new found fear of death (after stupid teenage years
involving rugby, rock-climbing and yes even motorcycling) I feel
something that there must be a french phrase for; A feeling of
desperate pleasure in life, the need to feel alive, waste no time or
opportunity, do crazy things, but spend more time loving my friends
too…. Probably the phrase starts off with “Oeuvre d’parachute”.
So I watched the clip from above without knowing what it was about. It
made me cry. “FUCK YEAH!” I think- What a trip. This guy knows he’s
dying and goes screaming into the wind.
